08/01/2019 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm –

Music and dancing with a view!

Music and dancing with a view! Join The O-Tones for a show at the top of a mountain at Summit House.

The O-Tones are thrilled to be part of this concert series at the top of the Holyoke Range. With gorgeous views on a summer night in a historic house with room to dance, who could ask for more? This Summer Concert Series has been going on for a long time and The O-Tones will bring their styles of Swing, Blues, Soul, Motown and Latin to this beautiful historic site. And there’s even room to dance on a beautiful summer evening.

Advance tickets for all shows (highly recommended) will be available beginningJune 1st, and until 2:00 pm day of show (cash or check only), at four area businesses:

– Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery, 172 Hockanum Road, Hadley

– Hadley Garden Center, 285 Russell Street (Rt. 9), Hadley

– Nuttelman’s Florists, 135 Woodlawn Avenue, Northampton

– Carey’s Flowers, 300 Newton Street (Rt. 116), South Hadley (closed July 1-4)

Gates open at 6:00 pm, and The Summit House will open at 7:00 pm. Picnicking is welcome (neither food nor beverages will be available for sale at the event). Tickets and parking are strictly limited, and carpooling from the base and halfway house is encouraged. The Summit House is wheelchair accessible. All hikers/walkers should please carry flashlights.

Porch Tickets: Once all 110 tickets for indoor seating have been sold, 60 “Porch Tickets” will be available for sale at the gate after 6:00 pm on a first-come, first-served basis. The music can be clearly heard on the porch, and patrons are welcome to bring their own lightweight, portable chairs. Please refer to this site for updates on shows.

At an elevation of 935 ft. overlooking the Pioneer Valley, the Summit House  was built in 1851, and its earliest visitors reads like a Who’s Who of 19th-century writers, poets, artists and dignitaries such as Charles Dickens, Jenny Lind and Thomas Cole. Its original timbers are over a century and a half old, and the building has a warm acoustic resonance, like an enormous vintage wooden musical instrument perched on top of a mountain. The sunsets viewed from its porch can be the most spectacular in western New England. And, picnicking is both welcomed and encouraged on the rolling high grounds of J. A. Skinner State Park. It is an ideal, exhilarating place for an evening of friends, food, music, and nature in all its summer glory.

Historic Laurel Park

The camp at Laurel Park was founded in 1872 as a Methodist summer retreat and used as a site for religious camp meetings and other spiritual services. At the same time, it became a site for the popular traveling Chautauqua festivals of the era. The grounds were developed with the ideals of the Chautauqua movement in mind: as a place to gather and create an open air “university of ideas” focused on lifelong learning through nature, music, oration and the arts. This goal was the impetus for building Normal Hall and the Tabernacle, structures whose original purpose was to provide space for teaching and performing.

Throughout the late 1800’s and early 1900’s Laurel Park was known as a gathering place where Pioneer Valley residents could come to be entertained, educated and inspired. Thousands of people came to traveling Chautauqua events on the grounds to hear the best-known speakers and entertainers of the day.

Gospel fundraiser to restore 1910 AME church

Gospel fundraiser to restore 1910 AME church with numerous musicians including Annie Patterson (vocals and guitar) and Mary Witt (vocals and bass).

Standing Together:Restoring Goodwin Memorial AME Zion Church

5pm Fundraising Dinner — Grace Episcopal Church   14 Boltwood Ave, Amherst, MA 01002

7pm Benefit Concert — First Church Amherst   165 Main St, Amherst, MA 01002

To help Goodwin Memorial AME Zion Church restore their historic 1910 chapel.

On that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen,
and repair its breaches, and raise up its ruins,
and rebuild it as in the days of old. (Amos 9:11)

History. Goodwin Memorial AME Zion Church is an African American congregation located at 41 Woodside Avenue in Amherst. The congregation grew out of the Zion Church originally constructed in 1869 with assistance by Amherst College as the first African American community in Amherst. Goodwin is part of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, an independent African American denomination founded in 1822.

Restoration needs. The chapel building, which was constructed in 1910 and is on the National Registry of Historic Places, is in need of extensive repairs. The building requires a new oil burner and other immediate repairs totalling $13,000 and additional restoration needs totaling at least another $40,000. The fundraiser will help the congregation meet urgent needs as well as raise matching funds for the more extensive restoration the building needs to continue serving the local African American community for many years to come.

The Interfaith Opportunities Network is holding a fundraising event on Saturday, October 26th. All receipts will go 100% to the restoration fund of Goodwin Church. Many Amherst-area congregations, businesses, and individuals are joining together to support this effort.

Dinner. This event will begin with a harvest dinner prepared by members of Goodwin Church and other area congregations – served from 5-6 pm in the parish hall behind Grace Episcopal Church (16 Spring Street). Orange Tickets are now available at A.J.Hastings and at the Grace Church office (9am-4pm on weekdays) or from the ION representatives in area congregations. Suggested donation is $15-20 for each event but any size donation is welcome!

Concert. The benefit will conclude with a concert down the street at First Church of Amherst 165 Main St, at 7:00 pm. Performers will include

  • Goodwin Memorial Choir
  • Amherst Area Gospel Choir
  • Leverett Community Chorus
  • The Gospel Resurrect Choir of Amherst College
  • Annie Patterson & Mary Witt
  • John Sheldon, and others.

Advance tickets for the concert only are available now, at the door on a “pay as led” basis, or at the ticket locations above for dinner tickets. (No one turned away for lack of funds!)  Note: You must have paper tickets (see above) to come to the dinner.
